IonQ and Sandia National Laboratories signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on quantum co-design for U.S. national security, covering trapped-ion hardware, silicon photonics, and software optimization — one of the first formal industry-national-lab quantum partnerships directly targeting defense co-design. In Europe, Ireland, Germany, Greece, and Luxembourg launched TransEuroOGS, a project to build a quantum-secure communications network using optical ground stations, advancing the EU's post-quantum satellite link infrastructure. On the physics side, researchers demonstrated that electromagnetic interactions can drive entanglement between trapped electrons — a potential new modality for solid-state qubits that bypasses some of the fabrication challenges facing superconducting approaches. And stepping back, IBM confirmed it is investing more than $10 billion in quantum computing over the next five years, spanning R&D, hardware, and ecosystem — one of the largest single-company quantum investment commitments on record.
