Two big hardware bets announced today. OptQC and NTT have formed a capital alliance to build a 1-million-qubit optical quantum computer, with a 10,000-qubit prototype targeted for FY2028 and the commercial system for FY2030 — one of the most ambitious physical qubit count targets yet, betting on photonics as the scalable path to fault tolerance. Separately, Algorithmiq and IBM updated their joint quantum advantage demonstration: their simulation of a heterogeneous quantum material — run on IBM quantum hardware — continues to outperform or match the world's best classical methods eight months after its debut on the Quantum Advantage Tracker, a rare durability test for a quantum advantage claim. On the application side, D-Wave and Nasdaq Verafin are teaming up to explore quantum-hybrid computing for financial crime detection, applying annealing and hybrid machine learning to anti-money laundering and fraud pattern recognition. And PsiQuantum is putting $250,000 into quantum workforce development in South Chicago — one of the first major quantum companies to explicitly invest in community-level workforce pipeline building.
